What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy is utilized in conjunction with other treatments to help restore mobility and function and to reduce pain. The physical therapist works with the patient using various exercises and modalities designed to improve the patient’s condition. Modalities include electrical stimulation, cryotherapy, and manual therapy, among others.
What is MedX?
MedX is a comprehensive rehabilitation program that incorporates the sports medicine approach to the treatment of chronic neck and back pain. The MedX machines are specially designed to provide the most effective means of isolating, safely testing, and directly strengthening the muscles in the low back and neck.
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is pain that has existed for several months and can potentially continue for years. Chronic pain usually stems from either an incurable medical condition or an injury that has previously healed. It can be limited to a specific region of the body or affect many regions at the same time.
Health
Once persistent pain evolves into complex chronic pain, single modality treatments—oral medications, injections, physical therapy—become less effective. In these complicated cases, physical, psychosocial, and emotional components are active and must be addressed simultaneously in a multidisciplinary chronic pain program for effective recovery.
The US makes up 4.6% of the world population and consumes 50% of the manufactured drugs; 80% of the global opioids; 99% of the hydrocodone and 67% of the worlds illegal drugs.
Therapy
Aquatic therapy has been shown to provide relief of symptoms from a variety of arthritides, traumatic injuries, and other musculoskeletal conditions. This procedure uses the therapeutic properties of water (e.g., buoyancy, resistance).

“Before coming to IPPMC I was in a chronic pain state. My pain was never better than a 7 level, even with medication. It affected my social life, my sex life, and work. I spent more time at home because of the pain. I was referred to IPPMC by my primary care doctor. I am feeling a whole lot better, feeling 80% better. I have nothing but good things to say about the clinic and personnel, the physical therapy team is also great. I would recommend IPPMC to my friends and family with pain.
“I came to IPPMC six years ago while my wife was being treated. My wife suggested that I get treated. I had such bad left leg pain I did not know if I would be able to work anymore. I received treatment the same day I met Dr. K. The pain was gone within a day. I came back a week later for my back pain. On my second visit I got an additional treatment and my pain subsided. Within a week I was back to normal. I could not believe that I could get well that fast. I have been coming back intermittently since when I have a flare up of my pain. I am good to go for a few years and I have prevented surgery.
“Three years ago in July I developed a horrific backache which was located in my thoracic region. I went to my doctor and she put me on gabapentin and a muscle relaxer and this did not help. My primary care sent me to one of her colleagues in her clinic. I was developing hypertension from my pain issues. They prescribed fentanyl to me in which I had an anaphylactic reaction. I was sent to the hospital by ambulance. A week later I was readmitted due to my pain as well as nausea and vomiting. I received a letter from these doctors stating I could not return to the clinic but never told me why. I was referred to IPPMC. I am now 100% pain free. I am no longer on pain medications. I just want to say that everybody is swell around IPPMC.
“I had a heart transplant in 2005. One of my antirejection medicines has a side effect of migraines and headaches. I had a constant headache for approximately four years. I was being treated with Tylenol every four hours. I also had tremors from the medication. I was in the ER at least once a month. It was effecting my daily life and I missed a lot of work. Once I started my treatments at IPPMC I have went from 1-2 migraines a month to one every three months. My daily headaches are now gone. I have not taken Tylenol other than for other issues. Thank you IPPMC.
“I’ve been dealing with chronic shoulder and neck pain which I have not had any long-term benefit from my treatments. I have been working with IPPMC physical therapy group who are doing a great job. I now have improved range of motion. Keep up the good work.
“I would like to thank all the doctor’s assistants and nurses at IPPMC. They have helped me out the most of any different medical places I have been for my pain. They have done the best job explaining and treating my pain after a 19 year period. The best place I ever went for my pain management. I would suggest anybody come here and try it if you are dealing with pain. Thank you IPPMC.
“Before coming to IPPMC I was dealing with crippling pain. I could not clean my house or go to work. I was basically disregarded when I went to see my physicians. They started giving me medications. This went on for 12 years and I became physically dependent on the medications and my pain was not much better. I was referred by a friend to IPPMC. Dr. Kowalkowski sat down and actually listened to me. So many doctors do not listen and disregarded me. I started my treatments immediately on my first visit. I cannot believe the change in a short period of time. I am so excited to get back to me. I have reduced my amount of medications and the treatments have been working. Thank you IPPMC.
“IPPMC is a great place to go for care. Dr. K is a very good doctor and I recommend patients with sports injuries or pain to consider seeing Dr. K and the great staff at IPPMC. They have helped me out a great deal. The people at IPPMC have been very nice and are always there to answer my questions and help me through all their different departments. Thank you.
“I’ve been dealing with pain for 14 years. The pain was intolerable to the point where I became inactive, I gained weight and my pain increased, it effected my mood, my behavior and my social life. Once making a decision to do something about it I did my research and found Dr. K and IPPMC. After speaking with my primary, I received a referral and met the team at IPPMC. In this journey to recover with my pain taking years, I have not felt this good in 14 years. I am 38 going back to 16. Living without pain has freed my mind to do other things and pursue my interest. Thank you IPPMC.
“Previous to coming to IPPMC I was seen by multiple doctors for my back pain in which they did not address my issues. My PCP suggested IPPMC. After my first visit I was treated and I felt really good. After a few modifications to my treatment I am 99% improved and we are still working on the last 1%. The staff has been nice and accommodating. I have recommended IPPMC to people I know with pain.
“I have been working with the physical therapy department at IPPMC with all the different therapists. I cannot say how friendly, how helpful, concerned and interested they have been in my care. They are an excellent team and are able to progress my therapies without causing me to take steps backward in my progress. Allen with myofascial work does an amazing job. I would highly recommend the physical therapy staff at IPPMC and my husband would validate that.
“I came to the IPPMC program in St. Cloud approximately seven months ago. At that time I felt like a dog drug off the street looking for help. I was on heroin and had severe back pain. Today I will make it short and sweet……..this summer I met with my family of seven kids and my wife. They were looking at preparing my funeral due to my state of being. Today, I feel like a 40-year-old man and I am very grateful I was able to find the team at IPPMC and will always be grateful to the doctors and staff. They have been honest with me and the therapies I have received. I cannot say how much they have benefited my quality of life.
“I feel like I came to IPPMC searching for answers when no one believed that I had chronic pain. Dr. K performed a comprehensive examination on my first visit. After having this pain for ten years I received 50% reduction in my pain. I also got off my Percocet, Zofran and Prilosec in which I have been on narcotics for ten years. I can now ride in a car upright versus laying down. I could not drive to the cities myself due to the pain and being off narcotics I am more in control of my driving. There is a great team of people to work with at IPPMC.
“On June 15, 1962 while in the air force, while in service in Vietnam, in the middle of the night I injured my lower back, next thing I knew it was being medevac’d. I’ve had back pain since that time, two spine surgeries and multiple injections over the years. I had some slight reduction of pain but continued to have pain. My doctors have been trying to fix my pain with pills over the past 51 years. I came to IPPMC. After my first visit and treatment my pain is 98% gone for the first time in many years. This is the first time I’ve been able to walk without referred hip pain for most of my life and doing good.
“I’m a 35-year-old male who has severe lower back pain and severe peripheral neuropathy. It was hard for me to walk, stand or sit due to the nerve pain. I have tried multiple treatments before coming to IPPMC. My experience at IPPMC has been wonderful. I had a spinal cord stimulator placed for my back and leg pain. It has reduced my pain by at least 80%. I would recommend IPPMC to anyone.
“I have had severe lower back pain since I was in my 30s. I am not 58 and I was referred by my medical doctor to be treated by Dr. K at IPPMC. After my first visit I had a year of pain relief. Due to my busy job I was not exercising and reaggravated my back and once again returned to be treated by Dr. K. I was once again treated and I can say within eight hours once again my pain was gone. I felt great and woke up in the morning pain free. I would recommended Dr. K to anybody, he is very professional, he is a nice guy.
“I was in a lot of pain, my activities were to a point where I was not able to take a bath or do hardly anything including housework. After I had my permanent stimulator placed I was 100% improved. I am able to walk, take care of myself, clean my house and even went camping since the permanent placement. IPPMC was great in my preparation and placement of my stimulator.
“I was in so much pain before I came to IPPMC that I was very depressed. Everything that IPPMC has done for me has helped. I am now able to function. The staff has been friendly and helpful. Physical therapy has been very professional. Allen has been doing myofascial release and knew exactly where to treat and what muscles to treat. I am not good with words but I wanted to express my gratitude for the care at IPPMC. Keep up the good work.
“I’ve been dealing with headaches, neck pain and back pain for over a year. I was referred to IPPMC by my primary care physician.” This is the first time I have actually gotten help for my pain and headaches. The people at IPPMC helped me a lot. The staff was nice to me and they did not push me too much because that would have aggravated my symptoms. I rarely ever have pain now and am a lot better. Thank you for all your help.
“Tell everyone from the front desk to the back that I feel absolutely wonderful! I feel like I’m 30 years old, and I’m 62! Excellent service, everyone took over and took very good care of me! Appreciate it!” Very sweet!!!!
“Thank you, Dr. Kowalkowski. You have accomplished more in my initial visit and subsequent visits than the other pain clinic did in over a year.
“I was having a lot of pain. I am 79 years old and I am dealing with a lot of neck and knee pain and I had quite a bit of pain before coming to IPPMC. I had trouble walking because of the pain. I came to IPPMC for treatment. I am feeling 100% better. It has helped me with my walking and I am currently involved in rehabilitation at IPPMC. The doctor did a good job.
“Get everybody that was involved today and give them a big hug”. I was feeling terrible this morning and feels like a million bucks now.
“I was running 8/10 pain over the last five years. Three and a half years ago I underwent a spinal decompression and last April I underwent a three level lumbar fusion due to progressive back pain. I continued to experience increased pain despite these two surgeries. I was unable to walk, I had no social life, no sex life, it was rough. There was no much I could do because of my pain. I was referred by my primary care to IPPMC due to my pain and I underwent a permanent placement of a spinal cord stimulator. Since then I am back to working in my shop, I have cut my pain medications in half and life is good and a lot better than what it was. I am very happy with my decision and so is my wife.
“I would like to give everybody that was involved in my care today a big hug. I was feeling terrible this morning and did not feel like I would be able to take care of my clients at work. You were able to accommodate me and treatment me today. I feel like a million bucks. I am very grateful for everybody at IPPMC and how they were able to help me. Thanks for the great care.
“I’ve been a mechanic for 25 years. My pain was effecting every aspect of my life including walking, driving a car, working, riding in a car and even sleeping. I’m overly grateful at this time for my treatments that I can’t express it any other way than I am overwhelmed with happiness with how I am feeling at this time and how my life is going. I have never experienced this type of pain relief ever. I haven’t felt this way in 20 years and that’s no bullshit.
“I was in a car accident in 2001 in which I fractured my neck and back. I had to wear a brace for three months. I have been dealing with pain since 2001. I lost my ability to walk far distances, driving a car for more than an hour, any type of physical activity effected me. In 2011 I had a motorcycle accident and broke my neck and upper back. I started a rehab program and I was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. I was referred to a different pain clinic and all they did was inject me with multiple steroids. I felt like a pin cushion without relief. They ultimately labeled me as only wanting pain medications despite all they were offering is multiple injections. I explained that pain medications make me sick and that I didn’t want pain medications and wanted pain relief. She was told that after multiple procedures that there was nothing else they could do. They basically left me in pain. Ultimately I was referred to IPPMC. IPPMC really seemed to focus on my pain. They tied in mental health into this. All the doctors work as a team. I felt like I wasn’t coming in being labeled or judged. I feel IPPMC has addressed my pain rather than blew me off.
“I was diagnosed with melanoma of my right calf in 2013. Due to the surgery I developed severe neurological pain in the right calf along with scar tissue. I was unable to walk on my right foot for a few months due to the pain and healing. I was in physical therapy for six months. The only solution I was given was pain medication for the pain which I did not want to take. I decided not to take any pain medication. My doctor said there was no other solution other than medication that I refused. I looked up treatment options on my own and I found IPPMC and decided to give them a try. After my treatments at IPPMC I am close to 100% back to my normal activity. Even the simple things in life like wearing my boots are not a major task, in winter that is huge! I am no longer waking up nightly because of pain. I can sleep and function which is huge to me. I can’t say enough good things about IPPMCs team”. Thank you!
“I was in a lot of pain when I came to IPPMC, I was depressed with a lot of anxiety. I presented for their multidisciplinary program including behavioral health, physical therapy and interventional treatments with Dr. K as well as pool therapy. I really love the pool therapy, it takes away half of my pain. I am sleeping better and I am more energetic. I am now smiling in the morning. I was really happy that they did not just throw a bunch of medications at me. I was afraid of performing this rehabilitation without medication as I had been in the past dependent on these medications because of my pain and anxiety. Ultimately they were looking out for my best interests which may have been harder for them to treat. Overall I am happy and glad I am not taking medications. I am feeling better. When you are on medications you are foggy. I am sleeping better and going on a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters with my father. Dr. K is awesome
“To all at IPPMC- “You are a close, strong, caring team from the front desk to the back. You all have been a blessing to our lives. Thank you.
