Post Stroke/TBI Pain

What is post stroke pain?

Central Post Stroke Pain (CPSP) can appear anywhere from several months to two years following a stroke. It rarely begins immediately afterward. When parts of the brain are damaged in a stroke, incoming signals from nerves can be misinterpreted as painful even when they are not. Even light touch can be painful in certain areas of the body. Usually this pain occurs in only one body part, on the side affected by the stroke. Sensations are variable but can include burning, throbbing, and aching. Treatment for CPSP involves oral medications such as antidepressants and anticonvulsants as well as electrical stimulation and implants. Relaxation techniques are also recommended to ease the pain, which can be aggravated by stress.
