Top 10 Anti-Aging Foods

People are constantly looking for the next anti-aging product to help prevent or reverse the inevitable. Although we here at Top 10 Workouts think a smile line or two is better than none at all, there are some products that make you look and feel good both inside and out; and they are available at your local grocer.

1. Avocado- This fruit, often mistaken as a vegetable, is a great source of monounsaturated fat that helps in the reduction of bad types of cholesterol in the body. Avocados are a good source of vitamin E and can help to maintain healthy skin and prevent skin aging.

2. Berries– “The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice”, is an old adage that rings true. All black and blue berries such as blackberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, and black grapes contain phytochemicals known as ‘flavonoids’ – powerful antioxidants which help to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals and aging.

3. Cruciferous vegetables– The large family of Cruciferous vegetables includes cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, turnip, brussles sprouts, radish and watercress. These veggies contain strong anti-aging properties which come from their high concentrations of antioxidants and sulfur. Both antioxidants and sulfur are known for promoting healthy skin and increased energy. These vegetables should be eaten raw or very lightly cooked so the important enzymes remain intact.

4. Garlic -Eating a clove of garlic a day (raw or cooked) helps to protect the body against cancer and heart disease.

5. Ginger– This spicy root can boost the digestive and circulatory systems, which can be useful for older people. Ginger may also help alleviate rheumatic aches and pains.

6. Nuts– Most varieties of nuts are good sources of minerals, particularly walnuts and Brazil nuts. Walnuts are rich in potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and selenium. Adding nuts to your diet can aid in digestive and immune system functioning, and improve your skin.

7. Yogurt- In the 1970s, Soviet Georgia was rumored to have more centenarians per capita than any other country. Reports at the time claimed that the secret of their long lives was yogurt, a food ubiquitous in their diets. While the age-defying powers of yogurt never have been proved directly, yogurt is rich in calcium, which helps stave off osteoporosis and contains “good bacteria” that help maintain gut health and diminish the incidence of age-related intestinal illness.

8. Whole Wheat Pasta and Brown Rice– Complex carbohydrates provide a consistent supply of energy throughout the day. Whole meal pasta is high in fibre and contains twice the amount of iron as normal pasta. Brown rice is also a highly recommended complex carbohydrate, which is high in fibre and B vitamins.

9. Watermelon- Watermelon flesh contains vitamins A, B, and C, which help against free radical damage and aging.

10. Water– Everyone has heard of the recommended 8 glasses of water a day; it’s an important way to remain healthy. Water helps us rid of the toxins and unwanted waste materials from your body. Thirst diminishes with age so don’t rely on this sensation.

Bonus

Red Wine- Need a great excuse to unwind after a long day? Red wine in moderation protects against heart disease, diabetes, and age-related memory loss due to a substance called “resveratrol”; which helps your body fight off age-related illnesses. And according to some studies, resveratrol may activate genes that slow cellular aging. Keep to one glass or two per day maximum to reap the benefits of vino.
