Summer Diet Detox: 10 Clean Foods You Should Be eating
Source: MSN Health
Nuts
Nuts are a healthy snack any time of day. Blue Diamond makes portable snack-size packs, and I love Kind Caramel Almond and Sea Salt bars. Full of protein, fiber and healthy fats, nuts are a great way to treat yourself while you're detoxing. Go for roasted and unsalted for the best balance of flavor and nutrition.
Arugula
Part of the cruciferous family of vegetables, arugula is high in fiber, antioxidants and glucosinolates, which may reduce the risk of cancer. It also has high levels of chlorophyll and is an anti-inflammatory food. You can enjoy arugula in a salad, pasta or rice dish, or it can also be used as a garnish.
Asparagus
The benefits of asparagus are plentiful, but one of the most important is that it helps with liver drainage. The liver is responsible for filtering the toxins out of the body, so cleaning that out will definitely help you live a healthier life. Asparagus can be prepared in many different ways, including steaming, boiling, stir-frying, roasting or grilling, and can be eaten as a side dish or as part of the main meal.
Organic sea vegetables
Sea vegetables are some of the few foods that contain sulfated polysaccharides, which are powerful anti-inflammatories. They also increase cardiovascular function and act as antioxidants and antivirals. Sea vegetables can be eaten in soups, salads, curries, grain dishes and baked vegetable dishes, as well as their more common use—in sushi.
Cashew milk
You won't find any sugar or genetically modified ingredients in this milk, but you will find a decadent cashew flavor. I recommend So Delicious Dairy Free, one of the only cashew milks on the mass market.
Buckwheat
There are many benefits to adding buckwheat to your diet, but the greatest for detoxing is the fact that it draws retained water out of the body, relieving swollen areas. It also helps with digestion, has a low glycemic index, and is gluten-free. It can be ground into flour for baking, used as a topping for soups or salads, or made into a crunchy cereal.
Goji berries
Known for being nutrient-dense, goji berries contain more vitamin C gram for gram than oranges and more beta-carotene than carrots. These two nutrients help remove toxins from your body and improve liver performance. Goji berries can be eaten a number of ways, including raw, or in juice, tea, smoothies, trail mix, cereal, muffins, scones or granola bars.
Hemp seeds
Hemp contains vitamins E and C, which are powerful antioxidants, as well as fiber, which cleanses the digestive tract. The seeds also contain chlorophyll, which helps cleanse the body of many toxins, including heavy metals. They can be eaten in salad, pasta, smoothies, juices, oatmeal, yogurt or anything else that could use a satisfying crunch.
Millet
Millet is considered a "smart carb" because it has a lot of fiber and is low in simple sugars, which gives it a relatively low glycemic index. It also hydrates your colon and acts as a prebiotic in your inner ecosystem, keeping everything in balance. Millet is gluten-free, which makes it a good substitute for wheat in breads—you can even toast it and cook it like rice.
Lentils
It's time to swap out the junk for some better-for-you meals. Get bikini-body-ready by adding these healthy (and delicious!) foods into your diet.
These legumes contain large amounts of insoluble dietary fiber, which helps clean out the digestive tract. They are also known to stabilize blood sugar by slowing down digestion, which keeps you from feeling hungry. While lentil soup is probably the most common way to eat them, you can also sprinkle lentils on a salad, bake them into bread or add them to a stir-fry.
